Glass Half Full

As with much of the Hollywood crowd, Scientology was, and is, prevalent among the behind-the-scenes folks in the studios. Not so for me. My spirituality is a natural approach. I prefer to use healing gems and crystals to improve my life. These natural materials have an inherent wavelength, that can affect my own body's energy, and change me for the better. Scientology has an e-meter which reads energy. Maybe the two aren't that different after all. Actually, I remember one day after a filming, I was showing one of the makeup girls my large gemstone orb. It was a healing gem, one that I'm certain cured me of migraines in the 90's. It was made of Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious, blue rock. This particular specimen was about 8 inches in diameter and completely spherical. I handed her the stone, but she misjudged the weight, and dropped it onto my left foot, breaking five metatarsial bones. Actually, to this day, I've had substantial foot pain from that accident. But hey - no headaches!

I also remember that day, because it was the day Whoopi resigned both her her position as the permanent center square, and as co-producer. That was a tough day.

September 1998

One of the most memorable guests I recall was Patrick Swayze. He came in early all five shoots and was incredibly professional. I remember after the fifth shoot, he was teaching a few of the hair and wardrobe folks a few dance moves. He was an incredible guy, on and off the set.

A friend of mine, screen name "smegheady2k allen" (I love that name, even if I don't fully understand it) emailed me a petition he signed. It was called No More Patrick Swayze Films. People would actually sign to prevent this artist from perfoming, from sharing his gift with the world? This really put me off for quite a while, and I questioned whether or not I should even be friends with "smegheady2k allen" and whether I even wanted to meet him in person, like we had agreed. When I told him I didn't want to meet, he got very angry. We haven't spoken since.

I thought of "smegheady2k allen" again recently, when Patrick Swayze died. And I thought about how pointless that online petition is now, more than ever. He'll always hold a special place in the center square... of my heart.

Going up!

An email I just received from squaresfan@aol.com:

"My name's Charlene and I live in Salt Lake City. As you can tell by my emal address, I am a big, fat Hollywood Squares Fan. Let me tell you about my day. I know this is kinda strange, but just hear me out. When I woke up, I had a feeling that something amazing was going happen. I forgot about it right away, because I stubbed my toe on the door comig out of my bedroom. I channel surfed (do you have that term in Canada?) for a while in my living room when I heard a sound that I thought was Misty (my amazing tabby LOL!) coughing up a hairball. Instead, I was sadened to see that it was my dog (his name was Piggy) choking on a chicken bone from last night's dinner. Of course, this scarred my, so I went to him and tried to help him. I don't want to talk about it, but he died. My hubby Phil buried him next to our zuccinni. As soon as Phil came inside, the phone rang and it was his doctor. I didn't really understand what the doctor said except that Phil got vibreo or something. Phil thinks it's from our pets we buried in our garden and eating the veggies. It makes kindof sense, too, because I hate vegggies and almost never eat them. Phil's the green thumb in the family. Anyway, you can tell that I am having a bad day. But then I found your blog and it really made things seem better and I feel like my feling from this morning that something great's gonna happen has come true. So don't let me down!"

Well, Charlene, I'll do my best! Anyone you'd like to hear about first? And yes, we certainly have the term "channel surfing" in Canada. I like to think of myself as a professional channel surfer, except nobody has given me any trophies! HAHA!!!

Fred Travalena, we'll miss you.

On the set of Hollywood squares, I've met the most amazing people:

Ricki Lake
Reba McEntire
Tom Bergeron (of course)
Mary Lou Retton
Tia Carrere
Delta Burke
Dik Butkus
Alf (yay!)
Tracey Gold
Mitchell Gaylord
Whoopi Goldberg
our dear friend Fred Travalena (RIP)
And so many more!

I'm dedicating this blog to retelling the amazing experiences I've had on the set. First story tomorrow!
